Pro Vice-Chancellor for Estates
Professor Tim Wess

Professor Tim Wess is Pro Vice-Chancellor, Estates, Head of Cardiff School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, and Chairman of the Wales Optometry Postgraduate Education Centre. He has previously served as Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor, Estates.
He holds a number of other administrative positions within the University,including membership of Council, Senate, Academic strategy committee, Human Resources, Equality and Diversity, and the Athena Swan co-ordination committees.
Professor Wess also holds a number of scientific administrative roles at both national and international level, including visiting scientific advisory roles to both France and Slovenia and for three years until July 2010 was a member of the Science Board for the Science & Technology Facilities Council. He is also a member of the governing body of the University of Newport.
Professor Wess has experience in innovation and engagement, communicating science to the public, advising science and health policy, and has worked with a number of charities including the Jubilee Sailing Trust, Fairbridge and the Royal National Institute of Blind People. He is also closely involved with the links between Artes Mundi and the University.
Professor Wess’ research interest revolves around molecular order and disorder in the structure of biological systems. This ranges from studying molecules in tissues to the interactions in biological materials from historical to archaeological contexts. His research group has been involved in the study of important historical collagen-based materials such as the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Domesday Book. He now is a STFC Science in Society fellow with special interest in engaging the public about Cultural Heritage.
