For Postgraduates

This page is for postgraduate research and masters students and contains links and information specifically useful and interesting for this section of the academic community.

It should be looked at in conjunction with the For Students/Graduates/Postgraduates section of the website which contains all information relevant for applying for jobs and career planning.

Marketing Your Postgraduate Qualification

There is a vast amount of information and advice available to postgraduate students to help develop their career management skills and market their postgraduate qualification.  Many of these sessions are run by the Careers Service but hosted by the Graduate Centre.

Recognising the value of your postgraduate qualification is important, but it is VITAL that you help potential employers recognise this too.  You cannot assume that they will immediately understand how your postgraduate or research degree will make you more employable to them.

Your postgraduate degree will have taught you subject specific skills which, if you are applying for work in your area of study will of course be essential.  Furthermore, you will have developed vital transferable skills which will be sought after.  Examples of these may be:

  • Analytical and problem solving
  • Decision making
  • Teamworking
  • Networking
  • Project management
  • Presentation
  • Written and oral communication
  • Advanced IT and technical skills
  • Working on your own initiative
  • Motivation/dedication/perseverance
  • An ability to learn

Your task is to skilfully demonstrate these skills on your CV and application form.  The Careers Service is able to help you with this in many ways.  Look at the Students/Graduates/Postgraduates section of the website to navigate your way to the service you require.

If you feel you need to develop any of these skills, Cardiff University's Skills Finder is a useful site to point you in the right direction.
