Professor Peter Wells receives Honour

Professor Peter Wells, the School of Engineering’s Scientific Director of the Institute of Medical Engineering and Medical Physics, is appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to healthcare science.



Professor Wells is a renowned and highly regarded figure in the world of medical ultrasound. His research has led the way in the development of two-dimensional imaging, automatic breast scanning, echocardiography systems and techniques for the assessment of arterial disease.  

He was Professor of Medical Physics in the Welsh National School of Medicine in the 1970s, before moving to Bristol to head the NHS Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering.  In 2004, he was appointed Distinguished Research Professor at the Cardiff School of Engineering.  

Professor Wells is a past-President of the British Medical Ultrasound Society, the British Institute of Radiology and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine.  His international scientific achievements resulted in his elections as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, then as a Fellow of the Royal Society and latterly as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.  The award of a CBE is further recognition of his work in advancement of science and engineering in healthcare.
