Cathays

Cathays is the main student area of Cardiff located just outside the city centre.

Location

Cathays begins immediately behind the Students’ Union, off Senghennydd Road, and stretches back to Crwys Road.

Atmosphere

Cathays is a hub of student life with a lively, buzzing atmosphere during term time. Its close proximity to the main university campus provides a convenient location for those who like to be within walking distance of all that the campus has to offer.

Amenities

Cathays is a vibrant, fun place to live with all essentials nearby; doctors' surgeries, supermarkets, numerous take-aways, pubs, cafes and sandwich bars on Salisbury Road.

Notable streets

  • Woodville Road, which has a Spar, a Sainsbury’s and some good sandwich shops
  • Crwys Road, which has a number of good restaurants and cafes as well as a Co-op
  • Cathays Terrace, which features Tesco and Lidl supermarket and is close to both the Optometry and Vision Sciences building and the new Hadyn Ellis Building

Socialising

Cathays offers many opportunities and venues in which to socialise.  There are a number of pubs on your doorstep including the Woodville on Woodville Road, the Crwys on Crwys Road and the Pen and Wig behind Park Place which are  very popular amongst the student population.  The area also boasts plenty of restaurants and cafes offering a variety of culinary options throughout the day and night with the main clusters around Salisbury Road and Crwys Road.

  • Graduate Centre: 15-25 mins, depending on street
  • City Centre: 10-25 mins, depending on street

Living in Cathays is lively. I live with people from around the world and it is a great opportunity to make friends. I live on Colum Road, which is quite busy, being close to the City Centre, the beautiful Bute Park and all the main buildings of Cardiff University. It is very convenient and comfortable!
