Preparing for entry to the UK - Visas and Immigration
* information last updated on Monday 24th August 2009
Once you have made your decision to come to Cardiff University you will need to make final arrangements, which will include, in most cases, obtaining a Student Visa.
Students from within the European Economic Area (EEA) and the European Union (EU) are free to travel to the UK. You do not need a visa, but you do need a passport. For a list of EEA and EU countries, please visit www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/eucitizens
If you are not from the EEA, you will need a student visa or entry clearance to come to the UK. You will need to obtain your student visa by applying to a British Embassy or High Commission before travelling to the UK.
Apply for your student visa as soon as possible - this procedure can take some time, especially during the busy summer months. In some countries, it can take up to two or three months - or even more - from the time you request an appointment, to getting your visa. Each year many students are unable to study in the UK because they did not leave enough time for their visa applications.
The UK Government recently introduced the new Points Based Immigration System. For all details of how the new immigration system will work for students, please check the following websites for up-to-date immigration advice:
