Induction and Orientation for International Students

Arriving in a new place can be a challenging and exciting experience!

At Cardiff, we take great care to help you settle into your new way of life in the University by organising a range of induction activities. At these events you will find all the information, fun and friends you need to settle easily into UK life.

What is the induction programme?

The Induction and Freshers’ Programme consists of a range of social events as well as other important enrolment and financial tasks that you need to do when you first arrive and before your studies begin. All these events are designed to give you the best possible start and aimed at helping you settle as easily as possible into your new life in Cardiff. Depending on the time of year, the programme of events can include parties, welcome talks, an information, sports and societies fairs, quizzes, tours of the University campus and the city as well as all the administrative tasks of enrolment, opening a bank account and police registration.

Are the events free?

Most international student events are free, however, to attend freshers’ social events in the Students Union, you will need to buy a Freshers’ wrist band. For more information on where to buy the freshers’ wrist band, how much it costs and what it includes see: http://www.cardiffstudents.com/

When is the induction programme?

The January induction programme runs from 19 - 23 January 2016.

There are different events organised for Erasmus+ and Study Abroad / International Exchange Students so please check the induction time table for the events relevant to you.

Welcome Talks and Lunch

Date: Tuesday 19 January
Time: 10.00 – 14.00
Venue: John Percival Building, Lecture Theatre 2.01 (campus map. 16)

The talks will include advice on what you need to do in your first few days, where to get help in finding private accommodation, if you need it. As well as information on how to use the Cardiff University computing network, you can learn how to sign up for extra English language classes alongside your academic course. Free lunch will be provided!

Discover Cardiff

Date: Tuesday 19 January
Time: 14.00 - 16.00
Meet: Council Chamber 1 & 2, Glamorgan Building, (campus map ref. 49)

Explore the city of Cardiff on a fact-finding walking tour with fellow student guides. You’ll be hungry after a 2-hour walk around the city, so come back to the University to see all your photos and for the free tea/coffee and cake!

Enrolment Support and Module Selection

Date: Wednesday 20 January
Time: 09.00 – 10.30
Venue: Glamorgan Building, Room 1.84 (campus map. 49)

You will have an opportunity to discuss module choices with professors. You will choose your modules and complete the online enrolment process and finalise your class timetable.

Student ID Card Collection and Bank Letter Service

Date: Wednesday 20 January
Time: 14.00 - 17:00
Venue: International Office (campus map. 60)

Bring your passport (essential) and collect your ID card which will give you access to libraries, Students’ Union, University buildings and sports facilities. Staff will be taking your picture and processing your card at this venue. If you need to open a UK bank account, you can also pick up your bank letters here.

Time: 12.30 – 14.00
Venue: International Office (campus map. 60)

Bring your passport (essential) and collect your ID card which will give you access to libraries, the Students’ Union, University buildings and sports facilities. Staff will be taking your picture and processing your card at this venue. If you need to open a UK bank account, you can also pick up your bank letters here.

Free Walking Campus Tour

Date: Thursday 21 January
Time: 10.30 – 11.30
Meet: Front of the Main Building, Museum Avenue (campus map ref. 39)

Find out where the really useful things are in the University with your student tour guides. Walking tours will take around an hour and will include practical information on everything from great places for cheap food to finding the easiest and quickest way of getting around campus.

Introductory Welsh Lesson - (Only for those students who have opted for Welsh modules)

Date: Thursday 21 January
Time: 15.00 – 17.00
Meet: John Percival Building, Room 1.69 (campus map ref. 16)

For students who have opted for the Welsh module, this will be your first introductory lesson where you will begin learning the history and language of Wales.

The Great British Quiz Night

Date: Thursday 21 January
Time: 19.30 - 22:00
Venue: Students' Union (campus map 38)
Price: Free

Open to all international students. Come along to a fun general knowledge quiz in a group or on your own. Superb prizes on offer for the winning team!

Advice on Referencing for your Academic Work

Date: Friday 22 January
Time: 09.00 - 10:00 IFSA Butler & Colgate University students only
Time: 10.00 - 11:00 All other Study Abroad students
Venue: IT training room, Science Library, 1st floor Main Building (campus map ref. 39)

At this seminar, you’ll obtain information on how to avoid charges of plagiarism by learning how to accurately reference the sources of information you use in your academic assignments.

Introductory Welsh Lesson - (Only for those students who have opted for Welsh modules)

This will be your second Welsh history, culture and languagelesson.

Exchange Welcome Evening

Date: Saturday 23 January

Venue: The Taf, Students' Union (campus map 38)
Price: Free

Enjoy a drink and chat on a night out in Cardiff with your fellow students from the Erasmus Society. They'll take you to all the best pubs. For more information about the Erasmus Society and events planned for the Spring Semester, join their Facebook group.

You will receive a welcome pack when you arrive in Cardiff University. In this pack will be a timetable of events. You can also pick up a pack from the International Student Help Desk on the 2nd floor the students' union.
