At Cardiff, we take great care to help you settle into your new way of life in the University by organising a range of induction activities. At these events you will find all the information, fun and friends you need to settle easily into UK life.

International Student Information Fair

Great Hall, 1st Floor, Students' Union

You will be able to get further advice and information about connecting to the internet, where the best place is to eat or visit in Cardiff, where to buy a mobile phone, help with accommodation, advice on registering with the Police and a doctor in Cardiff, how to get part-time work and anything else that you need to know now you’ve arrived in Cardiff!

Lots of University staff will be at the fair to help you! You’ll also be able to buy tickets at the Fair for the Party and the Guided Coach Tour and make an appointment to register with the Police (if relevant).

Walking Campus Tours

Meet tour guides at the front of Main Building, Museum Avenue

Find out where the really useful places are in the University with 2nd and 3rd year tour guides. Tours take 1 hour and will include practical information on everything from the best place to get cheap food to how to find part-time work.

Police Registration (Cost - £34)

Students from certain countries are required to register with the Police within 7 days of arrival in the UK. Appointments with the Police can be booked at the Arrivals Reception on Wednesday 18 – Thursday 19 September, at the Information Fair on Friday 20 September or from the International Office on Monday 23 September.

Find out what to expect now you’ve arrived in Cardiff: where to get help, how to get on to the internet, how to get a part-time job and what's going on in the first few weeks of term.

Parents Welcome Talk

Venue: Glamorgan Building Council Chambers

If your parents are travelling with you, we have a welcome talk to answer any questions they may have. Richard Cotton and Patrick Cosh from the International Office will be welcoming your parents to Cardiff University.

International Students' Party

Friday 20 September

Venue: Great Hall, Students' Union

This is a bit special - a Twmpath, a traditional swinging Welsh folk dance. Experience a warm Welsh welcome, meet fellow international students and have a fantastic evening!

Tickets for the party cost £5, but there are only 250 available, so book early online here or when you arrive in Cardiff you can buy tickets at the Students’ Union box offic, from the International Student Help Desk or at the Information Fair on Friday 21 September.

Discover Cardiff (free tour and lunch)

Friday 20 September
13:00 – 16:00

Venue: Meet tour guides at the front of Main Building, Museum Avenue

Explore the famous landmarks and find out the really useful places in the city with a 2nd and 3rd year tour guide and a group your fellow students. This quiz and fact finding walking tour will take around 2 hours.

After you’ve completed the quiz and tour, come for a free buffet with your team to Cardiff University Trevithick Building, (map ref. 58).

Open Air Double-Decker Bus Tour of the City and Bay of Cardiff - Cost £5

Saturday 21 September and Sunday 22 September
First tour starts at 10:00 

Enjoy a 1-hour guided bus tour of the beautiful city throughout the day for the reduced price of £5. Bus tours start at the main entrance to Cardiff Castle on Castle Street at 10.00 and leave every 30 minutes until 16.00.

Tell the bus driver that you are an international student from Cardiff University and give them the password "international" for your discounted £5 bus ticket.

The Great British Quiz Night

Tuesday 24 September

Venue: CF10, 1st Floor, Students' Union

Open to all international students. Come to a fun general knowledge quiz about the UK! There will be questions about popular British culture, geography, sport and music. Find out how much or little you know about living in Cardiff and the rest of Britain. Come with a friend or on your own and we'll find you a team! Great prizes on offer for the winners!

Guided Coach Tour

Sunday 29 September
08:45 – 17:00

Meet at the front of Main Building, on Museum Avenue, campus map. 39

Enjoy a Guided Tour of Wales’ superb tourist attractions. The tour costs £15, which covers lunch and professional guided tour on a luxury coach. There are 3 popular tours to choose from: Caerphilly Castle and the open air Welsh History Museum, or Cardiff Castle and the Welsh History Museum or Cardiff Castle and the Welsh Roman Museum.

Buy your tickets at the Information Fair on Friday 20 September or from the International Office, only limited tickets available, (especially for Cardiff Castle), so come early to avoid disappointment.

National and Local Companies Fairs

Big companies come to the Great Hall and bring some great offers and free gifts, so here is your chance to get your hands on some free items and discount vouchers!

Sports Fair

Wednesday 25th September

Venue: Great Hall, Students’ Union

This is for you if you’re interested in playing sport. Over 50 clubs will be there and you will be able to sign up to clubs and the Athletic Union.

Societies Fair

Joining a society is fantastic way to meet people! There is a huge range to choose from so come along and find out more.

If you are an Erasmus students arriving early September to arrange private accommodation, there are some social and information events that we have organised especially for you!

Student ID Card and Bank Letter Service

Monday 9 September
14:00 –16:00

4th Floor, Students' Union

Bring your passport or your Identity Card (essential) and collect your student ID card which will give you access to libraries, Students’ Union, University Buildings and sports facilities. Staff will be taking your picture and processing your card at this venue. You can also pick up your bank letters here.

Welcome Talks and Private Accommodation Advice

Trevithick Building, Ground Floor, Seminar Room 1&2 (campus map 58)

Come and listen to several useful talks about what you can expect now you’ve arrived in Cardiff.  The talks will include advice on what you need to do in your first few days, where to get help in finding private accommodation, if you need it.  As well as information on how to use the Cardiff University computing network, you can learn how to sign up for extra English language classes alongside your academic course.

Meet at 13:00 at the front of Main Building, Museum Avenue (campus map 39)

Explore the City of Cardiff with your fellow student tour guides. You will need your camera for this fact finding walking tour. You’ll work up an appetite after a 2 hour walk round the city, so come back to the University to see all your photos and for a delicious free lunch!

Other Activities

In the 3rd and 4th week of September there are lots of new activities taking place in the Students’ Union for all new students. These activities are organised just for you and are intended to give you an idea of what life at Cardiff is like. They also give you the opportunity to meet new friends and settle in before the busy first week of term.

Postgraduate Welcome Events
