Need help with your English?

Are you concerned about your English language skills? Do you already have an offer to study with us or are you thinking about submitting an application for 2013? Cardiff University’s pre-sessional courses have been designed to help students improve their English skills before academic classes start.

English Language Courses

Cardiff University offers a range of English Language courses for students who want to improve their language skills before academic classes start

Summer Pre-sessional

Cardiff University runs 8 and 10 week Pre-sessional courses during the summer months, designed for students with an offer to start a degree programme in the autumn.

The course is a full-time, intensive English language programme specifically designed for international students with an offer to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level at Cardiff University.

Previous graduates have told us that the course has given them extra confidence and enabled them to participate more fully in their lectures and seminars.

Postgraduate Research Pre-sessional

Cardiff University now offers a Postgraduate Research Pre-sessional course, which is specifically for students who need to improve their English language skills before joining the research environment at Cardiff. This course is a highly intensive three-month course starting in September and designed specifically for students who are planning to start their research degree study in January.

English for University Study Programme

Formerly known as the “Bridge” Programme, this is a full-time English language and study skills course, which can be a 2, 6 or 9-month programme (depending on existing English language skills).

It is specifically designed for International students from outside the EU who:

  • want to improve their English language skills to the level needed for English-medium university education in the UK
  • want to learn the academic study skills they need to study effectively in the UK

The programme provides each student with the skills and language needed for a smooth transition into academic study. We aim to develop confident and successful students who are equipped for university study in the UK.

If you are interested in applying for a Pre-sessional English course or would like to find out more, please visit our English Language Programmes pages.

Remember to apply early as spaces fill up quickly!

What is the value of a Cardiff education?

We can calculate the yearly tuition fees and the cost of living in Cardiff, but what we can’t put a price tag on, are employment opportunities, professional contacts and transferable skills that come with a Cardiff University education.

Employability

  • With a degree from a leading UK Russell Group university, you are more likely to gain an edge over other job applicants. In an increasingly competitive global market, everyone needs an edge!
  • Many of our courses have a practical elements which may offer exposure to local and national countries, realistic projects and experience that will prepare you for life after graduation.

Critical transferable skills

  • Our problem-based learning develops skills that will help you think independently and carry out research on brand new problems.
  • Our research-led courses will help you develop the skills needed to analyse problems and consider innovative solutions.

Access to cutting-edge technology and research

  • Cardiff University has secured around £45million for research projects and generates more than £100million from research grants and contracts each year.
  • The new Hadyn Ellis building, opening later this year, is a £30million building that will host two world-leading institutes which are leaders in their field: the ‘European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute’ and the ‘Neuroscience and Mental Health Research Institute’.
  • Our Biosciences building recently obtained a £4million extension to house seminar rooms and refectories.

Career support

  • This free service is available to students, graduates and postgraduates of Cardiff University whatever your year, academic school or degree discipline.
  • International students can book free 30-minute career sessions throughout the year (there is no limit to the amount of bookings you can make) to discuss career options, carry out interview practice and look through CVs and cover letters.
  • Workshops are also available for international students to learn about employment regulations and discuss work experience ideas with trained advisers.

Cardiff is one of the most affordable “university cities” in the UK with rent typically £47 a week cheaper than London. Therefore your money should go that bit further in Cardiff.
Our students have been able to budget in more experiences and get more value for their money here than anywhere else. And that’s what we call ‘value’!
