Admissions Criteria

This information will assist applicants in assessing whether they have the skills, attributes and qualifications which the Cardiff School of Mathematics has identified as being important if students are to succeed on its undergraduate programmes of study. It also summarises the process which the School uses for selecting students and making offers, so that applicants understand how the School considers their applications.

Scope of the Criteria

All undergraduate Mathematics programmes, including selection for the Mathematics component of joint honours programmes.

Profile of Applications

There are approximately 800 applications for about 170 places and so there is a high demand for places to study maths at Cardiff. Students are attracted by our reputation for excellent teaching quality standards, the friendly atmosphere that pervades the School, and the care and support students receive from the staff. We strive to ensure that our students react enthusiastically to their courses and thoroughly enjoy their learning experience. We are proud of our students and their achievements.

Most students develop a strong attachment to Cardiff and some stay on in the School of Mathematics to study for a postgraduate degree. We are an internationally recognised centre of excellence for research in the mathematical sciences. This helps our undergraduate programmes too, since new research informs and dictates novel directions for undergraduate teaching. That is the way that mathematics develops.

Opportunities to learn more about the School and its programme of study

Several university Open Days are held each year and provide the opportunity to visit all academic schools in addition to the residences, the Students’ Union and sports facilities. Please see our Open Day webpage for further details.
