Committees and Membership

Committee Support is responsible for the arrangements for the main University committees, and co-ordinate the production, collation and distribution of agenda and papers for all University committee meetings. We co-ordinate the membership of University committees, including nominations, elections and ballots as necessary. We also record committee membership details on a database, and maintain an archive of Committee minutes, agenda and papers (in paper and electronic format).

Committee Structure

Purpose

The purpose of the Committee Structure is to provide:

  • A framework within which those committees established by the Charter and Statutes (Council, Court and Senate), those required by legislation and/or good practice (health and safety, equality etc) and those necessary for the effective operation of the institution, can conduct their business openly and according to their terms of reference;
  • A clear delineation of how those committees relate to each other and how reporting lines are intended to operate.

Definitions

Committees perform a variety of functions and it is their terms of reference, as defined by Ordinance, which determine their composition, powers and their lines of reporting. They may also provide a means of representation and consultation. For the present purpose the terms ‘Committee’ and ‘Board’ are interchangeable and normally denote standing bodies which will have specific authority delegated to them by higher committees.

The term ‘Group’ or ‘Panel’ is intended to denote bodies which are largely advisory and/or consultative. Their remits, composition and lines of reporting are defined by minute of their parent Committee It is envisaged that membership of such groups and panels may include University administrative officers in addition to lay members and/or academic staff representatives .
