Signposting advertising

Background

In order to maximise the value of recruitment advertising, and following external professional advice on this issue, Human Resources will now be operating ‘Signposting’ advertising for all vacancies advertised in the local press with effect from January 2006.

This presents an opportunity to modernise the way in which Cardiff University carries out recruitment advertising.  For the majority of vacancies, advertising in the local or national media is still the most effective way to recruit the best staff.  The cost of this, however, can be prohibitive and the increasing use of IT has reduced the press monopoly on this area.

The New Approach

Signpost adverts will contain the job title, school/directorate, salary, vacancy number, closing date and occasionally a sentence of explanation.  Potential applicants will then be referred to the Jobs website for additional information, or they can ring HR for an application pack to be sent out.

Feedback from other large organisations which have already adopted this approach does not indicate a reduction in the number of applications.  There are significant financial savings, as well as a decrease in the administrative workload.  Advert text will not be required from recruiters who wish to advertise vacancies in the Western Mail and South Wales Echo, nor will it be required for jobs which will only be advertised on the Cardiff University Jobs Page.  For further information on requirements, please see

Coverage

Signposting advertising will be used for ALL jobs advertised in the local press, such as the Western Mail and South Wales Echo.  In addition, HR will be encouraging the use of this approach in a number of other areas, such as research staff recruitment.

Monitoring

The effectiveness of this approach will be closely monitored and, if successful, it may be expanded, where feasible, to the national press.

Feedback relating to this change in recruitment advertising is welcomed.  This approach will be regularly reviewed to ensure that it is meeting the needs of School and Directorates and is fully compliant with legislation and best practice.  In addition, the significant financial savings to be made by Schools and Directorates by adopting this approach will be closely monitored.
