Volcanic Ash Disruption
Advice for University staff
Continued disruption to air travel is expected this week, following the volcanic eruption in Iceland.
The University has issued the following guidelines for staff stranded abroad.
Staff members who are away on business may continue to work remotely. Those who have been away on holiday and are unable to return to the UK will be covered by the adverse weather policy and should contact their line manager as soon as possible to discuss next steps. Permission can be sought to either work remotely where feasible; agree to make up lost time over a period; take annual leave days; or take unpaid leave.
Helpful information for stranded British nationals is available from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, including health issues, insurance, and visa issues. General information is also available on passenger rights, ports and ferry operators. Staff members stranded abroad are also advised to contact their local embassy, high commission or consulate.
Situation updates
Further information on continued airspace restrictions is available from NATS, the UK’s air traffic control service.
Passengers seeking flight updates should consult their airlines directly.
The closure of UK airspace has also affected the distribution of mail by air and there may be delays to mail being delivered in some areas. Please visit Royal Mail for service updates.
