information literacy

The popularity of Cardiff's famous Cephalonian Method - a pioneering technique that uses music, colour and audience participation to involve and engage students - continues to spread.

Since being presented at the national School Libraries Conference in Peterborough in April 2009, the method has subsequently found a new audience in schools around the UK. It has also proved a success in New Zealand and was presented at the prestigious LIANZI conference in Auckland in October.

The Cephalonian Method has been adopted in universities across the UK and around the world.

The method forms part of Cardiff University's world-leading information literacy resources, which are proving a huge success in today's information-rich environment.

Dewi the Dragon

Media Resources Centre graphic designer Ruth Bowen created the Designed to Smile 'hero' character of Dewi the Dragon.

The Designed to Smile campaign programme was announced in March 2008, and is the public face of the £1.4m National Child Oral Health Improvement Programme.

The programme builds on pilot work undertaken in the Merthyr area, in developing different teaching options that create the right dental healthcare message for children.

Ruth's designs were well received by the pilot programme and the Welsh Assembly. The idea was further developed for leaflet promotion, mobile dental units' livery, staff uniforms and included on the Designed to Smile website

Cardiff University has the largest wireless network in UK Higher Education...

...comprising 19 wireless controllers in seven locations and over 1,114 wireless access points covering 102 buildings.

Information Services' network team has been working with colleagues in the University’s Estates Division, School of Medicine and the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board to expand wireless network provision on the Heath Park campus.

The wireless network coverage (enabling access to Cardiff University networks such as CU-WiFi and the Higher Education JANET EDUROAM network), has been extended to six further buildings at the University Hospital Wales – Henry Wellcome, Medical Genetics, Heart Research, Tenovus, Neuadd Merionydd (including the new Café Bar), and the new Cancer Genetics building.

This equates to an increase in wireless service provision at the Hospital site by 60% over the last 12 months through the deployment of an additional 137 wireless access points. The expansion was achieved through a joint INSRV and School of Medicine funding collaboration.

book chapter

The Law Library has been providing much-needed reference material for legal practitioners in Malawi, South East Africa.

As part of the library's stock review during summer 2009, a number of older textbooks were removed to create space for new materials.

Some textbooks have been sent to Malawi for legal practitioners to use, since gaining access to English legal texts is one of the main obstacles to Malawian lawyers and solicitors setting up private practices.

The Law and Legal Practice Libraries will continue to send text and practice materials to Malawi whenever suitable books become available in order to help the country's legal profession.
