Devolution and Divergence: Health and Social Care in the United Kingdom
30 November - 1 December 2009
City Hall, Cardiff
Over the decade since the introduction of devolution in the UK, the design, delivery and priorities for health and social care in the four countries of the Union are seemingly becoming increasingly divergent. This two day conference will examine the extent to which this is happening in reality and what the implications are for service delivery, professional practice, professional development and the education of future health and social care professionals. It will provide an opportunity for service users, policy makers, managers, professional practitioners, representatives of professional and regulatory bodies, researchers and educators to come together to discuss these issues and consider the implications for the future of service delivery and development.
The conference will include a number of invited keynote speakers including Dr Scott Greer from the University of Michigan and University College, London whose work focuses especially on post-devolution development of health policy in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales plus other speakers including representatives of service-users, practitioners, educators, students and professional body representatives.

Timescapes 2010 Conference
Registration Deadline 18 December 2009
20 January 2010
Glamorgan Building, King Edward VIIth Avenue, Cardiff
The development of Qualitative Longitudinal Methods (QLL) for studying people’s lives and worlds temporally is an exciting area of innovative methodological work in the social sciences today. The conference will (i) focus on the promises and challenges of QLL study; (ii) showcase developments in QLL methodology that are being taken forward by the Timescapes network and (iii) consider how a commitment to multidisciplinary working can assist in taking forward the agendas of QLL/temporal study.
The conference is being organised jointly by Cardiff School of Social Sciences and the Timescapes network (www.timescapes.leeds.ac.uk). Cardiff School of Social Sciences is one of the UK’s foremost multidisciplinary centres of excellence in social science research methodology. Timescapes is the first major Qualitative Longitudinal Study to be funded in the UK. Its substantive interests are in exploring the ways in which personal and family relationships unfold over time and over the lifecourse, along with the significance of time in people’s lives.
