David Machin is a Lecturer at Cardiff University School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies.

Analysing popular Music and Critical Discourse Analysis book covers

He has published widely, with particular research interests in Visual Communication and Globalisation.

He has an interest in innovative semiotic approaches drawing on linguistic methods in the form of Multimodal Analysis and in Critical Discourse Analysis. 

He is also interested in language in journalism and in visual design.  His books include Analysing popular Music (2010), Media Audiences (2009), Global Media Discourse (2007) andIntroduction to Multimodality (2007).

He is Co-Editor of the journal Social Semiotics.
