Dr Rowden is a graduate of Goldsmith's College, University of London, and City University where she completed her PhD in 2002. She has previously lectured at City University, Rouen University and Royal Holloway, University of London. Dr Rowden's research deals mainly with 19th-century opera and France, and her book Republican Morality and Catholic Tradition at the Opera: Massenet's Hérodiade and Thaïs was published in 2004. Her research activities range from music editing and archival study to microhistory and reception studies and include operatic staging and dance, iconography and gender. Dr Rowden was editorial assistant to Richard Langham Smith on a new edition of Bizet's Carmen, to be published by Edition Peters in 2007. She is a member of the steering committee of the AHRC French Music Criticism Network and is also a singer who has recently formed the trio Vibes'n Voice.

Clair Rowden's current research include the completion of a book on opera and caricature in the French fin-de-siècle press as well as two chapters concerned with nineteenth-century French choral music (Gounod, Franck, David and Massenet) in 19th-Century Choral Music (London: Routledge, 2009). She is also preparing papers for conferences, including one for 'Music and Choreography in France from Leo Delibes to Florent Schmitt', Saint-Etienne University, France.
