Sustainable transport link a reality

14 Rhagfyr 2007

A sustainable local transport project supported by Cardiff University has won a share of a £50M prize on offer in the ITV 1 programme ‘The People’s £50 million Lottery Giveaway’.

The River Ely Bridge which will provide pedestrian and cycle access between Cardiff and Penarth was one of 79 schemes that comprised the Sustrans Connect2 bid for the £50M prize money.

In a public online and telephone vote, Sustrans Connect2 beat off competition from three other projects across the UK to scoop the prize money, which is provided by The Big Lottery Fund.

Professor Justin Lewis, Head of the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies who supported the Sustrans bid said: "This is fantastic news - Sustrans Connect2 is a worthy winner of The People’s 50 Million. The project promotes environmentally friendly transport across the UK and the River Ely Bridge will encourage more people to walk and cycle to their daily destinations. Everyone who voted for Sustrans - Cardiff staff, students and alumni has helped to create a more sustainable transport link for people who work and live in Cardiff, as well as those who visit the city."

Sustrans Connect2 aims to revitalise walking and cycling in communities by overcoming transport gaps in sustainable ways. The £50M prize money will be divided between each of the 79 projects, with the River Ely Bridge earmarked to receive £1.15M.

The University actively promotes sustainable ways of travel to staff members. As well as operating the Cardiff University Liftshare Scheme, the University has adopted an official bike strategy which looks into more visible bike racks, better signing of routes, more drying rooms for wet clothing and a map of bike user’s facilities around campus.
