Students make their mark for free

23 Tachwedd 2007

Next generation entrepreneurs have been inspiring groups of young people in their local community to think about a future in enterprise.

About 20 students from across the University have embarked on a series of projects that will encourage school pupils and college students to consider increasing their entrepreneurial skills and know-how.

Starting at neighbouring Coleg Glan Hafren, the SIFE UR LIFE project, the brainchild of Students in Free Enterprise Cardiff (SIFE), was made possible following funding from Make Your Mark, the national campaign behind Enterprise Week, which is aimed at creating a more enterprising culture in the UK.

More than 250 college students turned out to find out what a future in enterprise could look like, and took part in interactive workshops and discussions. Based around five areas all SIFE projects are designed to address: entrepreneurship, financial literacy, business ethics, market economics and personal success skills. The aim of SIFE UR LIFE was to get across some of the basic ideas of entrepreneurship and encourage students to think about the possibility of starting and running a business.

Leon Worang, a second year Business and International Management student said: "Being a member of SIFE really is very exciting. It’s given us all a chance to develop our own set of skills for the future on top of our degree subjects, as well as provide an opportunity to give something back to the local community.

"Everyone thinks that enterprise is all about making a profit, but it’s also about making something profitable for the communities around you. We certainly feel as if we achieved that and had a great deal of fun listening to the ideas the students came up with in the process."

SIFE is a global organisation with teams of students in universities in 47 countries. Cardiff is one of twenty UK universities currently involved. The University project was among more than 5000 events run as part of Enterprise Week this year.

Catherine Bushell, University entrepreneurship officer said: "We have a strong culture of entrepreneurship among our students, many of whom have gone on to achieve great things in the world of global business. This is yet another excellent example of the degree of enthusiasm our students have for learning new skills and using them in a highly profitable way."

SIFE UR LIFE will be embarking on a tour of other local colleges over the next few months.
