University past and present mark Remembrance Day

10 Tachwedd 2007

Past and present students and staff of the University have gathered alongside representatives from the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force to honour those members of the University who have given their lives in the service of their country during the World Wars and other military campaigns.

Ahead of Cardiff’s Observance of the Two Minute Silence on Sunday, University Chaplain, The Reverend Gareth Powell led an Act of Remembrance in the Council Chamber. Dr John Herbert, Association of Past Students; Jonny Cox, President, Chief Executive of Cardiff University Student’s Union, and a representative from the University Cadet Corp laid wreaths on the University’s War Memorials.

Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Terry Threadgold who welcomed the assembly said:

"The war memorials of this University contain the names of some one hundred and seventy three staff and students who died during the two world wars. We gather today to honour their memory, along with those members of the University who have died in subsequent conflicts.

"As service personnel continue to defend the freedoms we value, it is particularly appropriate that former students of the University, many of you having served our country in the cause of peace, are able to gather with current members of the military units associated with the University."
