Network of Dignity Advisers goes live

The network of advisers has been established as part of the University’s Dignity at Work and Study Policy. The policy aim is that people should be treated fairly and with respect and that harassment, bullying and victimisation are understood to be unacceptable forms of behaviour.

The ten Dignity Advisers are members of staff who have been trained to offer confidential, impartial, one-to-one advice and support to people having issues with harassment or bullying. They will help staff feel supported, gain a better understanding of their rights and options and prepare an action plan.

The Dignity Advice Network is designed to be complementary with existing support structures within the University. Advisers will not decide on the validity of a complaint, encourage a particular course of action, nor will they represent members of staff in any formal proceedings.

The Dignity Advisers can be contacted through the Staff Counselling Service. The adviser appointed to the case will never be from the same school or department as the individual asking for support. The present group of advisers will be in post for up to 18 months, when a replacement network will be appointed.

Professor Terry Threadgold, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Staff, said: "This new network will provide support for staff facing sensitive issues and help them achieve the fairest outcome. It is an important part of the University’s commitment to maintaining a positive working environment where unacceptable behaviour is challenged as a matter of course."
