Welsh Livery Guild travel bursary

12 Gorffennaf 2007

Three students from Cardiff University are celebrating after winning travel bursaries from the Welsh Livery Guild to pursue research abroad.

Iain Martin, a student on the Diploma in Journalism Studies course, has been awarded £1000 by the Guild for a project which will take him to Sierra Leone to work with and learn from African journalists in their coverage of the country’s General Election this summer.

Iain said: "Working abroad covering a major election is something most journalists aspire to. Reporters in Sierra Leone face many challenges and I’d like to witness first hand and from local journalists what it’s like to work in a challenging media environment."

The two further students receiving bursaries from the Guild are Loys Richards-Hobbs and Judith White, both PhD students in the School of Biosciences.

Loys will travel to Sweden for five weeks in the autumn to work under the direction of Dr Jorgen Johnsson at Gothenburg University where she’ll investigate fish foraging behaviour, while Judith will visit the University of Michigan to gain experience and training in the field of molecular epidemiology.

The Welsh Livery Guild was formed to promote education, science and the fine arts and in particular the promotion of skills and associated professional activities in Wales.
