Academics call for a school food revolution

Once portrayed as something to be endured rather than enjoyed, the humble school meal now finds itself at the forefront of contemporary debates about healthy eating and ecological sustainability.

These debates were addressed by a number of high-profile speakers this week when the School of City and Regional Planning hosted the launch of a new book by Professor Kevin Morgan and Dr Roberta Sonnino.

The First Minister Rhodri Morgan AM, the Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing Jane Davidson AM, and Dr Tony Jewell, the Chief Medical Officer for Wales, were among those who gathered to pay tribute to the enormous impact of the research being carried out by Professor Morgan and Dr Sonnino.

Highlighting the importance of sustainable development to Wales’ national agenda, Jane Davidson AM said: "Kevin and Roberta’s work will influence policy here as well as across the world." Dr Tony Jewell described the pair as "key allies" in the campaign to improve the health of the people of Wales.

The book, entitled The School Food Revolution: Public Food and the Challenge of Sustainable Development, draws on new empirical data collected in urban and rural areas around the world to take a critical look at school food reform, the creation of markets for local producers and new food education initiatives.

The book’s perspective on the design and delivery of sustainable school food systems in an international context has already drawn worldwide attention with Professor Morgan and Dr Sonnino invited to present their research in 13 countries to date. Dr Sonnino also gave a seminar at the United Nations in New York on the topic of the school food revolution earlier this year.

Speaking at the launch, Professor Terry Marsden, Head of City and Regional Planning, said: "I am proud to congratulate Kevin and Roberta on the research they are carrying out into public food and sustainable development, combining academic work with relevant policy. We are a research-led School and want to contribute to making Wales exemplary in the context of food procurement and supply."
