Members of the School of Biosciences and the University’s RACD directorate attended the Bioscience for Growth event on 24th March, marking the culmination of the School’s entry into the BBSRC Excellence with Impact competition.

The Excellence with Impact competition recognises delivery of economic and social impact by Institutions active in the Biosciences. The School was one of 20 competitors, and highlighted its all round activities in Innovation and Engagement. These included:

• Progenteq, a staff-based spin-out company, founded by Professor Charlie Archer and offering knee cartilage repair
• The Common Cold Centre, the world’s only research centre dedicated to clinical trials of cold treatments, run by Professor Ron Eccles
• Danau Girang Field Centre, a research and training facility for conservation in the Borneo jungle, run in partnership with the local Wildlife Department
• Brain Awareness Campaign, a public awareness campaign to promote understanding of mental health and brain degeneration

The competition judges particularly commended the School’s ‘Learn about Life’ scheme, a pioneering project introducing schoolchildren to research in the Biosciences. The scheme has been running for the past decade, involving up to 240 children over two days during National Science and Engineering Week, and is supported by Research Councils UK, the Physiology Society, the Welsh Assembly and Career Wales.

Professor Adrian Harwood, the School’s Head of Innovation, Partnership and Engagement, said: "The Excellence with Impact Awards set an extremely valuable milestone for development of the Innovation and Engagement activities within the School and provided an opportunity to project our commitment to working with business, government and social partners to national business leaders and policymakers. I was pleased to hear praise for our innovative Learn about Life scheme at the awards ceremony."
