Control conference

25 Mehefin 2009

Control abstract

The director of Demos - the London-based power and political think tank – is to give the keynote address in a Cardiff University conference focusing on the theme of control.

Richard Reeves will speak to an audience of postgraduate researchers from across the UK and overseas, giving a speech entitled ‘Power to the People: a Republican Liberal Manifesto’.

His speech will bring to a close the first day of the conference which will also see presentations on subjects such as border control and censorship.

Organised by the Researcher and Graduate School in the Humanities, the conference aims to encourage postgraduate researchers from across the humanities to consider how the concept of ‘control’ may come to bear on their own subjects of research.

Professor Judi Loach, Director of the Researcher and Graduate School said: "Richard Reeves is a dynamic thinker who, as Director of Demos, is in an ideal position to discuss key issues of control and individual well-being which affect us all. We're thrilled to be welcoming him to the conference and anticipate that his ideas will stimulate significant discussion amongst the postgraduate researchers attending this event."

A variety of humanities disciplines are represented as part of the event including politics, history, philosophy, cultural studies, media studies, literary and language studies (including Welsh), religious studies, archaeology, music and architectural history. Specific conference presentations focus on subjects such as religious control, social policy and obsession.

The conference runs over two days (25 and 26 June) and is taking place in the School of European Studies. Further information can be found here.
