Guests from the Welsh Assembly, British Council Wales, the Chinese Embassy and schools from across Cardiff joined the Lord Mayor and staff from Cardiff Confucius Institute for the 2010 Chinese New Year Gala.

The Gala took place in front of over 250 guests at the Reardon Smith Theatre at Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales. The evening was principally developed by the University’s Chinese Student and Scholars Association. It showcased a range of Chinese acts including dance, film, a traditional culture fashion show and drama.

Both the Lord Mayor and Mr Qiao – the First Minister for Education at the Chinese Embassy – paid tribute to the work of the Confucius Institute among schools across the region, having previously met and discussed its China Week programme with various school head teachers.

During the week the Institute, based at the University’s Centre for Lifelong Learning, ran a range of Chinese language and Tai Chi workshops for sixth formers at City Hall, attended by more than 500 pupils, as part of the Wales, Europe and the World Event.

This week also marks the conclusion of the Institute’s Welsh Baccalaureate programme which has been running for four weeks in Cathays High School. The 20 hours of sessions included Mandarin, Chinese music and dance, Tai Chi and Chinese Calligraphy.
