Honorary Fellowships

graduation-imageA journalist, broadcaster and presenter, a Liberal Democrat Life Peer and one of Wales’ most successful entrepreneurs are amongst those to be honoured by the University at its annual degree ceremonies (18-22 July).

Fiona Phillips, Baroness Jenny Randerson and Sir Stanley Thomas join four other eminent individuals from the fields of medicine, finance and science, amongst others, to receive Honorary Fellowships.

Honorary Fellowships are awarded to individuals who have achieved international distinction in their field.

More than 7000 students will graduate in this year’s ceremonies, and approximately 19,000 people will be welcomed to Cardiff for the celebrations. The event is one of the biggest in the University’s calendar and the ceremonies will be broadcast live on the BBC Big Screen in the Hayes area of Cardiff and streamed on the University’s website.

The Honorary Fellows for 2011 are:

Henry Engelhardt

Henry Engelhardt, Chief Executive of the Admiral Group plc, one of the most successful car insurance firms in the UK. (Wednesday 20 July, 10am)

Professor Dame Julia Higgins

Professor Dame Julia Higgins DBE FRS FREng, Emeritus Professor of Polymer Science in the Department of Chemical Engineering in Imperial College, London. (Monday 18 July, 11am)

Bettany Hughes

Bettany Hughes, a historian, author and broadcaster who has written and presented a number of documentaries for television. (Tuesday 19 July, 1.15pm)

Professor Zhaofeng Lu

Professor Zhaofeng Lu, President of Capital Medical University and a great supporter of Cardiff-China link. (Thursday 21 July, 4.30pm)

Fiona Phillips - web

Fiona Phillips, a well known television presenter and broadcaster who presented GMTV for twelve years, writes a weekly column in the Daily Mirror and is a columnist for Tesco magazine. (Thursday 21 July, 1.15pm)

Baroness Jenny Randerson - web

Baroness Jenny Randerson, a Liberal Democrat Life Peer and a member of the National Assembly for Wales for 12 years. (Monday 18 July, 2.30pm)

Sir Stanley Thomas

Sir Stanley Thomas, one of Wales’s most successful entrepreneurs and prominent philanthropists. (Friday 22 July, 2.30pm)
