President's Scholars 2013

The Chancellor and Vice Chancellor will today welcome to Cardiff some of the world’s most promising postgraduate research students in an event hosted by the University. The 37-strong cohort represents the third intake to the growing base of the President’s Research Scholars.

The President’s Research Scholars scheme is a multi-million pound package of postgraduate scholarships designed to tackle some of the key challenges facing researchers from a variety of disciplines.

The scholarships provide new opportunities for groundbreaking research, including the development of an artificial cornea transplant, which circumvents the dependency on post mortem transplants; advanced gear design, sponsored by NASA, and research involving brain imaging to help advance our understanding of autism and sensory deficit conditions.

The following video will be shown at the event, which showcases some of the current and new scholars’ research

The award aims to attract the highest quality candidates and is an essential aspect of the University’s aspiration to build a vibrant and growing postgraduate community. An important condition for applicants of the scholarship is that their research has significant implications for society.

The University’s Chancellor and Nobel Prize winner, Sir Martin Evans FRS, said:

"I am delighted that the University continues to make such a substantial financial investment in attracting the best postgraduate research students to the University.

"These scholarships underline the University’s long-standing commitment to academic excellence and will help maintain our reputation for world-leading academic research in key areas."

The new scholars will have the opportunity to work on new research projects under the supervision of the University’s most successful and established researchers in dynamic research environments.

The President's Research Scholarship fund was established in 2010 with the backing of a £4M investment fund, set up to coincide with the inauguration of Nobel Laureate Professor Sir Martin Evans as the University’s then President. To date, 105 President’s research scholarships have been awarded.

Those eligible for funding as President Scholars will hold a first-class or a 2.1 honours degree, plus a postgraduate Masters degree at distinction level.
