Music in Italy

05 Ebrill 2008

CIAV students in concert

Students from the University’s academy to train opera stars will give a series of concerts and perform two operas on an upcoming tour of Italy.

Starting in Barga on 5 April 2008 students from the Cardiff International Academy of Voice will be joined by the choir Cor Caerdydd for a sacred concert of religious music at Barga’s cathedral, Il Duomo.

Following this the students will give an operatic gala at the Teatro dei Differenti in Barga on 12 April where their repertoire includes arias and ensembles.

During their time in Italy, the students will be working on the staging of two operas - Il Signor Bruschino by Rossini and Acts 3 and 4 of Puccini's La boheme - with Italian director Carlo da Prato and an Italian conductor, Massimiliano Murrali.

The tour will culminate with the performance of these opera’s in Barga on April 16 and in Florence on April 18.

Soprano Elizabeth Franklin-Kitchen is one of the Academy’s students performing in Italy: "This is the first time many of us have performed in Italy - it's a huge privilege to be working in such beautiful surroundings and in the country where opera was born. We're all very excited indeed. "

In 2007 students from the Academy undertook a similar trip to Italy, but this year's programme is longer and more intensive. The Academy, which is directed by renowned Welsh tenor Dennis O’Neill provides vocal, musical and stylistic coaching to some of the most exciting talent in world opera.
