Prospective Cardiff students will get the chance to enjoy a new interactive experience as part of the University’s annual Open Day programme.

As well as organised talks covering student life, student finance, the UCAS application process and tours of the Cathays Park Campus, Halls of Residence, sports, libraries and award winning Students’ Union – prospective students will also get the chance to interact directly with fellow visitors, students and staff and access information instantly.

"Social media provides a real opportunity to offer a unique and interactive Open Day experience," according to David Roylance, Head of Undergraduate Recruitment.

"As well as offering visitors and their families open access to our full range of facilities, a taster of our unique approach to teaching and our world-leading research we want to encourage people to interact, comment on their experience and engage with staff, students and fellow visitors to get the answers they need.

"It also means they will have access to instant answers to information during their visit which could be as simple as ‘where’s the best place to eat’ or directions around campus to places they want to visit next," he added.

To get the most out of their Cardiff Open Day experience, visitors can follow the University live on Twitter @cardiffuniug where they can ask questions, discuss and comment on their experience, exchange thoughts with fellow visitors or ask questions on scholarships and bursaries on offer.

The prospective students will also be able to ‘Check in’ with the University on Facebook and will be automatically entered into a free prize draw to win an i-Pad.

For those visitors without access to a smartphone, hotspots dotted around campus will help them get online and find out more about the University’s new campaign, Thrive.

The Thrive website will also be hosting an "Open Day Take Over" with Cardiff students uploading pictures and information throughout the day for visitors to look through and comment on later, and providing prospective students who couldn’t make the day the chance to experience it from their own home.

Offering a unique insight into Cardiff life, Thrive allows prospective students to engage directly with current Cardiff students – our Insiders who are all on-hand to share their real-life experiences through their Facebook pages.

Visitors using the Thrive ‘Hotspots’ can also take the Thrive Challenge to win prizes including Varsity rugby tickets, USB sticks and enter a free prize draw to win a laptop.

Visitors considering studying for one of our healthcare related subjects will also get the chance to visit and experience the University’s new state-of-the-art health education centre – The Cochrane Building.

Named after the University’s leading medical pioneers, Archie Cochrane who pioneered the use of evidence-based medicine, the new £18M education centre offers students the latest teaching, library and state-of-the-art simulation facilities for all healthcare schools.

The University’s Open Day takes place on Wednesday 25th April.
