Presidents past and present join in celebrations

30 Hydref 2008

Cardiff Students’ Union presidents past and present have united for a special evening of celebration as part of the University’s 125th anniversary.

An occasion to reunite with old friends and to make new ones, the Presidents’ Dinner was an opportunity for the University and the Students’ Union to honour those who have contributed and will continue to contribute greatly to the development of both institutions.

The Presidents’ Dinner at the National Museum and Gallery Wales in Cardiff attracted more than 150 guests, including 100 alumni. Among the guests were the Rt. Hon. Bill Rammell, Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and Students' Union President, 1982-1983, Charles Bassett, former Canadian High Commissioner to Central Africa and Lord Sir Emyr Jones Parry and Lady Lynn Jones Parry, President of the Students’ Union from 1968/69.

Rt Hon Lord Neil Kinnock of Bedwellty, President of Cardiff University and Students’ Union President from 1965 – 1966, said: "There’ll be some past Presidents of the Union who have recently held office and are used to the gigantic size of the student body, and others from distant times who - like me - headed a Union of 3000 or less. Regardless of time and size, we all have in common a great debt of gratitude to the University and to the Union.

"Both gave all of us opportunities for personal development, responsibility, usefulness (hopefully) and (certainly) unrelenting fun which would otherwise have been completely inaccessible to us.

"I know that many of you maintain contact and give support to the University. Please spread and strengthen that among all who came to Cardiff. It’s one of the best ways to build for the next 125 years."

During Cardiff University’s 125th Anniversary year the University not only wants to celebrate past achievements, but build a legacy for future generations. As part of the Reunion celebration, the ‘Your Union’ Appeal was launched in order to enhance the student experience even further by building on and improving some of the facilities used by today’s students and the services they have access to.

John Robertson, Director of the Development and Alumni Relations said: "It was tremendous to be able to invite so many friends, supporters and colleagues back to the University, particularly in our anniversary year.

"The Dinner was a highlight in the 125 calendar providing us with a fitting opportunity to say a personal thank you to all the hardworking Student Union presidents, sabbatical officers and Med Club presidents who have invested their energies in the University and Students’ Union over the years."

The evening’s entertainment included a fundraising ‘Money Can’t Buy’ auction hosted by BBC Wales News presenter Jamie Owen, with rousing music from the world-renowned Morriston Orpheus Male Voice Choir.
