A team of undergraduates from Cardiff University have put up a brave fight in the current series of the academic quiz University Challenge.

Ed Carey (School of European Studies), Sophie Fitzsimmons (School of Medicine), James Selvey (School of Biosciences) and Christopher Clark (School of Physics and Astronomy) pitted their wits against Kings College London in the series. Their round was broadcast on BBC 2 on 24th August 2009.

Answering questions on subjects as varied as geography, classical music and maths, the team – who had the youngest age on average in the series - narrowly lost to their opponents by 15 points.

Ed Carey, Students’ Union President and team member said: "It was an incredible privilege and we enjoyed every minute of our day recording the programme. Although we didn’t make the next stage of the competition we were delighted to get through as roughly 32 teams from 125 applicant teams in the UK are chosen."

The four were put together after a series of tests at the University. They then entered the University Challenge regional rounds and were selected for the programme after outperforming other competitors in the region.

Ed added: "I hope that we have set a benchmark for all subsequent Cardiff teams so that, in the future, Cardiff teams can build on our initial success and even go on to win it. In order for this to happen, I’d encourage all Schools to encourage their most erudite students to apply for next year’s series."

University Challenge is hosted by Jeremy Paxman. The episode featuring Cardiff is available to watch again via the BBC iplayer -
