A prominent historian of written culture was recently welcomed to the University month to deliver the Researcher and Graduate School in Humanities Annual Lecture.

Professor Roger Chartier is Professor of Writing and Cultures in Early Modern France at the Collège de France, and Annenberg Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania. His lecture, entitled ‘The Author’s Hand’, took place on Monday 19th October 2009.

Staff, students and members of the public attended the lecture in the Birt Acres Lecture Theatre, Bute Building.

Professor Chartier’s recent work has focused on the relationship between written culture as a whole and literature, particularly theatrical plays, for France, England and Spain. He also links this work to broader historiographical and methodological interests dealing with the relations between history and other disciplines.

In addition to the Annual Lecture, Professor Chartier also lead a related seminar on Tuesday 20th October, specifically for postgraduate researchers in the Humanities.
