Three millennia of service recognised

06 Tachwedd 2008

A total of more than 3,300 years of University service has been acknowledged at a special awards ceremony.

Long service certificates and gifts were presented to 65 members of staff who had served the University of Wales College of Medicine for more than 25 or 40 years prior to the merger to form Cardiff University in 2004.

They included Professor William Mapleson, a lecturer and researcher in anaesthetics, who joined the University in 1952 and who remains active in research at the age of 82.

The awards were presented by Professor Steve Tomlinson, former Vice-Chancellor of the College of Medicine and now Provost of Cardiff University.

He told the staff members and their guests: "As an institution which prides itself on its reputation, it is important to remember how that reputation was achieved. Without committed, dedicated and loyal staff, I believe that the University would not be where it is today."

The staff celebratory awards were distributed at a lunch, organised by the Human Resources Directorate. The long servers included academics, clinicians, technical staff, library, secretarial and human resources staff from across the range of Schools which made up the College of Medicine. They received their choice of gift – either a crystal bowl, vase, clock or the option to donate the value of their gift, in whole or part, to charity.
