Immunisation Advice

We strongly advise all new students to ensure that they are immunised against Meningitis C and Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR), prior to attending University.

Immunisation against Meningitis and Septicaemia

The following statement has been issued by Dr Robert Richards, MB,BCh (University Medical Officer) and Dr Chris Turner (Director of Registry, Governance & Students Directorate);

As you may be aware, the Government campaign to provide vaccinations against Group C meningococcal disease to all people under the age of 18 resident in the United Kingdom has been extremely successful. It has resulted in a sharp reduction in the incidence of reported cases of Group C meningococcal disease. It is possible you have been vaccinated as part of the campaign.

Meningococcal disease is a bacterial infection causing meningitis and/or septicaemia (blood poisoning). There are several different strains of the bacteria, but the commonest in the UK are Group B and Group C.

We wish to maintain the high level of success achieved by the campaign. Therefore, if you have not been vaccinated and will be living in a hall of residence in Cardiff University in the forthcoming academic year, you should attempt to obtain vaccination prior to arrival at the University. If this is not possible for any reason, arrangements can be made for you to obtain vaccination with the GP with whom you register when in Cardiff.

Please note, as the vaccine only protects against the Group C strain, you should:
- make sure you are familiar with the symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia
- register with a General Practitioner as soon as you arrive in Cardiff
