1979-82: Research and Administrative Assistant; Education, Training and Technology Directorate, Confederation of British Industry, London.
1985-89: Research Fellow, IRRU, University of Warwick. Four-year contract to undertake ESRC-funded research project on British managerial attitudes towards training.
1989-94: Research Fellow (promoted Senior Research Fellow 1993), IRRU, University of Warwick. Five-year contract to undertake ESRC-funded research project on personnel management policies for the secondary school teaching workforce.
1991-92: Centre for Economic Performance, LSE. One-year part-time consultancy on the CEP's project on UK training policies.
1994-98: Senior Research Fellow, IRRU, University of Warwick. Five-year contract to undertake ESRC-funded research into workplace change.
1998-06 Deputy Director of ESRC Centre on Skills, Knowledge and Organisational Performance, Warwick Business School, and Principle Research Fellow and then Professorial Fellow.

Member of the editorial boards of the International Journal of Training and Development, Journal of Industrial Relations and Education and Training, and acted as co-editor for the 1999 Oxford Review of Economic Policy issue on skills, knowledge and performance.
