Medical Illustration

Medical Illustration is the smallest department in the School reflecting the number of practitioners in the UK. Having our origins in the Cardiff School of Medical Photography we have been the only consistent provider of education in the field since 1969.
Commencing in 1990, we now provide postgraduate qualifications in medical illustration targeted specifically at clinical photographers and graphic designers working in healthcare. We currently offer the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Illustration which was developed to be a primary qualification route for graduates in photography and graphic design. A revised MSc programme is being developed that will integrate with the other Masters programmes provided by the School.

Medical illustration is one of the Healthcare Science professions and as a group is seeking State Registration. This has been agreed for Clinical Photographers who are currently awaiting Parliamentary approval to complete the process. The professional bodies operate a voluntary register through the independent Committee for Accreditation of Medical Illustration Practitioners (CAMIP). Our postgraduate qualifications are accredited by both the Institute of Medical Illustrators and the British Institute of Professional Photography and successful students can join the CAMIP register.
