Research Interests

My research work has a strong focus on the promotion of exercise and physical activity and the assessment and management of mobility problems in people with chronic health conditions. I work to promote information exchange and engagement in research into the physiotherapy role in illness prevention and health promotion through physical activity in Long Term Neurological Condition (LTNC)s and in particular Huntington’s Disease (HD). To date, this work is following a staged process to gather sufficient evidence to support full scale clinical trials related to physiotherapy for people with Long Term Neurological Conditions (LTNCs) and is linked with the specialist Huntington’s disease (HD) Clinic based in Cardiff.

I am co-lead facilitator of two of the European Huntington’s Disease Network (EHDN) working groups (WGs) (Physiotherapy and Environmental Modifiers WGs) and actively involved in developments in the field of HD, physical activity and rehabilitation and have established collaborations across the United Kingdom, Europe, USA and Australia. Projects include developing guidance for physiotherapists working with HD, determining best outcome measures to assess efficacy of physiotherapy interventions and considering the impact of environmental factors on disease onset and progression in HD.
