Experts from primary care and public health nursing collaborated at Cardiff University to discuss ‘Future Innovations in Primary Care/Public Health Nursing’ at a recent study day.
The day was sponsored by the Marchioness of Bute and Lady St David’s Fund.
The study day was organised by the Primary Care and Public Health Nursing Team, Cardiff School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies and incorporated presentations from Kay Jeynes, Head of District Nursing, Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust on ‘Community Nursing Strategy for Wales – An Overview’; Karen Logan, Nursing Standard Nurse of the Year presented her research on Continence; ‘The Family Nurse Consultation’ by Claire Hyndman, Welsh Assembly Government; ‘Delivering the New NHS for Wales (Primary Care Strategy) from Dr Christopher Jones CBE, Rhondda Cynon Taf Local Health Board and ‘Safeguarding Children: A Public Health Issue’ from Lyne Slater, NPHS Designated Nurse for Child Protection.
The day was attended by practitioners, managers, local health board nurses, primary care lecturers, practice teachers and students. The day was chaired by Judith Carrier, Professional Head, Primary Care and Public Health Nursing Team, Cardiff School of Nursing and Midwifery.
Judith Carrier said “There are many challenges facing NHS staff at present as there is a reconfiguration of services with a greater shift towards primary care. This means that community nurses are facing new demands which creates new challenges. This enjoyable study day evaluated very positively and gave nurses timeout to discuss opportunities for their practice and research in the future.”
