Netball: Winners of BUCS Conference Cup & Sports Bursar is Wales U21 Vice Captain.

Cardiff University Sport & Exercise Department is pleased to announce that the Netball 3rd team are now the BUCS Western Conference Cup Champions 2009. The final was played at the BUCS Championships in Sheffield last week where the team were crowned Champions after a comprehensive victory 53-12 over UWE Hartpury’s 1st team. The Conference Cup has only been introduced to the BUCS calendar this year and for the Cardiff team to go all the way is an outstanding achievement and all those involved should be congratulated.

Over 50 other teams were in the first round draw where Cardiff comfortable swept past their Glamorgan University counterparts. Next up was a very tight match in another local derby against UWIC, the girls showed some outstanding concentration and determination to win by a single goal and progress to a third round walkover against Aberystwyth. The quarter-final was away from home against UWE Bristol and once again the opposition were brushed aside by a winning margin of over 20 goals. Swansea University 1st team provided the semi-final opposition and again the strength in depth that Cardiff University Netball has was clear for all to see after a resounding 46-23 victory. Sport & Exercise would like to congratulate the Netball club on another successful year and wish the 3rd team the best of luck in the defence of their trophy next year.

On another positive note for Cardiff University Netball, Sports Bursar Kylie Paynter was named Wales’ Vice-Captain for the recent European Netball U21 Championships in Glasgow. Kylie played in all 3 fixtures in what proved to be a very close run competition. Wales beat Scotland in the first match but then unfortunately lost to England by just 5 goals and Northern Ireland by 6 goals. This resulted in the team winning the bronze medal which is an improvement on last year’s 4th place. The next major event for the U21’s is the World Youth Championships in the Cook Islands in September 2009.

Kylie is a regular member of the Cardiff University 1st team (BUCS Premier League), the Celtic Dragons (Netball Super League) as well as previously being capped at Senior, U21, U19 and U17 levels for Wales and representing British Universities last year.  Kylie is now in the final year of an Accounting and Finance degree.  Sport & Exercise would like to congratulate her on balancing her Netball and academic studies so well and wish her well for the remainder of the year.
