Performance: Bursars make their mark on the National stage

9 February 2009

Cardiff University Sport & Exercise would like to congratulate a number of sports bursars on their recent international achievements.

Bethan Mercer, a Welsh International Gymnast, recently competed in the Northern European Championships in Iceland. Bethan managed to finish an extremely admirable 6th position in the Bar final but the highlight of the competition was winning a Gold medal in the team competition. Whilst combining a Physiotherapy degree with elite sport may not be easy Bethan has balanced the two well so far and hopes to compete in high profile events such as the World Student Games and Commonwealth Games in the next 2 years.

In Judo, Hannah Browne has just won a Gold medal at the Welsh Junior Open which was recently held in Cardiff. This is an improvement on the bronze she won last year and is another step in the right direction. Next up is the target of regaining her place in the British U20 squad before beginning to make the step up to senior competition. With London 2012 being her ultimate goal Cardiff University Sport & Exercise hopes to support Hannah as best possible whilst she combines her Judo with the demands a degree in Medicine can bring.

Cardiff University Sport and Exercise Department is also pleased to announce that Kylie Paynter has once again been selected for the Welsh Netball senior’s long squad before the European Championships in April. As well as this Kylie is a member of the Celtic Dragons squad in the Netball Super League and an integral part of the Wales U21 squad. The U21’s have the European Championships in Glasgow from March 6th – 8th before jetting off to the World Youth Championships in the Cook Islands next July. The whole squad have been busy raising funds for the trip and given Kylie is also in the 3rd year of an Accounting and Finance degree she deserves plenty of credit for being able to manage her time so effectively.

Sport and Exercise would like to congratulate Bethan, Hannah and Kylie and wish them the best for the remainder of the year.
